Job Purpose:
Develop and administer legal processes and procedures to identify and mitigate legal risks and protect DHL's legal and business interests in line with commercial needs, established legal frameworks, standards, assess applicable laws and regulations, and advise on and draft complex contractual agreements to best enhance the DHL business’ success.
Your Tasks:
The workload will encompass all aspects of aviation law insofar as it affects DHL’s aviation network operations and its multiple cargo airlines, supporting a growing global fleet of in excess of 380 jet aircraft. The Team seeks to retain all legal work in-house wherever possible, so the candidate must be comfortable with the quality of his/her own advice and retain an appreciation of the commercial imperatives. Although focussed on aviation, the main areas of activity conventionally are otherwise broad and typically encompass the following:
  • negotiation and preparation of documentation required in connection with the acquisition and disposal of new and used aircraft, engines and other major asset items;
  • aircraft conversion arrangements facilitating the introduction of new aircraft types to the market;
  • negotiation of aircraft and asset operating/dry leases, sub-leases, wet leases, charters, and block space arrangements etc, and facilitating the introduction of new assets and routes into the DHL global network;
  • aid the establishment of air networks or co-operative ventures, code share relationships, long term capacity commitments;
  • maintenance agreements for engine, aircraft and related equipment;
  • establishing new airline operations and supporting operating agreements;
  • facilitating the leasing of DHL aircraft assets to DHL’s preferred airline suppliers;
  • advising upon ground handling, pilot secondment and fuel supply agreements, whether bespoke or based on industry accepted documentation;
  • support to the Group’s aviation capacity sales teams (Sales Agency Agreements, Block Space and Interline relationships)
  • participation in the aviation crisis control programme and dealing with aircraft related incidents;

The individual will also advise upon, or be the principal point of contact for queries relating to, risk and insurance, taxation, customs and finance related queries, and will coordinate the analysis and response to these disciplines in the contexts of many transactions the individual will be required to manage. It may also include liaison with governmental aviation agencies in transactions being progressed on behalf of business peers. The role will also demand that the individual assist auditors, manage external advisers where required, and frequently deal with the organisations business suppliers and customers. When time permits, the individual will provide training on legal matters to business colleagues.
Your Profile:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience/qualification
  • 5 years’ or more experience as a legal advisor/attorney in aviation law
